Halloween is the time of year for spooky costumes, decorations and delicious sweets. Whilst it’s perfectly acceptable to indulge, remember that overconsumption of sugary treats can have a scary impact on your oral health.
When you eat sugary treats, the bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugars, producing harmful acids that can lead to tooth decay and cavities. Over time, this can result in gum disease, fillings and even tooth loss.
Therefore we advise that you enjoy Halloween treats in moderation and with a few dental care tips in mind.
Limit your consumption
Avoid snacking on sugary treats throughout the day, as it prolongs exposure to sugar. Instead, limit sugary treats to mealtimes.
Choose wisely
Opt for sweets that are less harmful to your teeth, such as dark chocolate, which has less sugar than many other sweets. It is also a good idea to avoid sticky sweets and toffees, which can get stuck in your teeth, prolonging exposure to sugar.
Hydrate
Drinking water after consuming sweets helps to rinse away sugars, and neutralises acids in your mouth.
Brush and floss
Ensure you are brushing your teeth twice a day, not forgetting to clean between your teeth using interdental brushes or floss.
Wishing you all a spooktacular Halloween!
