Thirteen tips for healthy teeth and gums


We all want to have perfect teeth that are free of defects and problems. Unfortunately though, things aren’t that easy in real life. But don’t despair, because we’ll share thirteen helpful tips to help you to keep your teeth and gums the best that they can be.

1.Brush regularly

Brush your teeth at least twice a day and preferably after every meal. Also, when you brush, make sure that it’s for at least two minutes every time.

2. Choose the right toothbrush for you

Your toothbrush should be the right size so that you can brush your teeth without any problems. You should also select a toothbrush with an appropriate hardness for your teeth.

3. Don’t snack

Try not to snack between meals because it increases the number of times that your teeth are under attack from acidity. If you do snack, then choose something healthy like nuts, carrots or celery.

4. Avoid sugary and acidic foods

Limit the amount of sugary and acidic foods you eat, because both types of food can cause cavities. Sugary foods include cake, biscuits, fruit juice, dried fruit, sweets and chocolate, and acidic foods include coffee and alcohol.

5. Change your toothbrush regularly

Change your toothbrush every three months or when the bristles become old and worn.

6. Remember to floss

Floss your teeth every night before brushing. If you find it hard to use floss, try an interdental brush instead, as they’re easier to use.

7. Don’t rinse after brushing

Don’t rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. Rinsing after brushing will remove all the helpful fluoride and toothpaste that was still in your mouth. If you do need to rinse, do it before brushing or use a fluoride mouthwash instead.

8. Don’t smoke

Smoking isn’t just harmful to your lungs; it’s bad for your oral health as well. Tobacco can cause oral problems such as bad breath, stained teeth and even oral cancer.

9. Limit your alcohol intake

Alcohol is another substance that’s not just bad for your overall health but also bad for your oral health too. It can cause temporary dry mouth and put your teeth at risk of cavities.

10. Chew gum

Sugar-free chewing gum can be beneficial for your teeth because it promotes your mouth’s production of saliva.

11. Use mouthwash

The regular use of fluoride mouthwash can help to keep your enamel strong, thereby reducing your risk of cavities.

12. Use disclosing tablets

To find out how well you’re brushing, use a disclosing tablet. You can buy them at most pharmacies, and they’re really useful because they stain all your plaque red. This way, you can see the parts of your teeth that you need to brush more.

13. Visit the dentist regularly

Visit the dentist at least once a year and preferably twice a year. It’s an opportunity for the dentist to discover any problems with your teeth and gums, and to fix these problems before they get worse.
