Poor oral health can lead to tooth decay and tooth loss, which is why it important to maintain our children’s oral health from birth. Teaching our children good habits and cleaning routines from a young age, will benefit them throughout their life.

Children should start having their teeth brushed as soon as their first tooth appears. An age-appropriate toothbrush and toothpaste should be used twice a day to create a positive routine that your child will become accustomed to.

An integral part of maintaining your child’s oral health is regular dental visits. Once that first tooth comes through, call the practice to arrange for your child to have a check-up at your next visit. Regular visits will allow your dentist to keep an eye on your child’s development, providing tips and advice as they grow.

Attention should be paid to your child’s diet, to establish healthy habits whilst they are young. Many drinks, including fizzy drinks and juices, are bad for our teeth. Acids and sugars can attack the enamel, causing tooth erosion. It is best to limit these types of drinks, opting instead for water or milk. Of course we also know that chocolates and other sweet treats are full of sugar. Again, these items should be limited where possible.
