Your First Visit: The New Patient Exam

A new patient dental exam at Park Street Dental is more thorough than many people expect — and it begins with a conversation.

“We start with a casual conversation,” Dr Nasir explains. “When was their last dental visit, their medical history, what they’re looking to get from the appointment.” Consent, medical history and social history all come first, and are gone over again once you’re in the chair.

Then comes the part that surprises people. “We actually check the outside of the mouth. We check their face, we check their neck. We’re experts in the whole head and neck area, so there are things we can pick up that people might not notice.” X-rays are usually taken at a first appointment, so he can see beneath the teeth — the roots and the bone — not just the surface.

From there, you’ll agree a plan together. “We come up with a treatment plan that explains everything we believe they need. But it’s a conversation. We say, this is what we recommend, and if you’re interested in getting it done, we’d be happy to support you through that journey.”

General Dentistry: Fillings, Crowns and Bridges Explained

Restorative treatments like white fillings, crowns and bridges are the backbone of general dentistry — and Dr Nasir believes the key to good care is helping patients genuinely understand their options.

“A picture is a thousand words,” he says. Rather than reaching for jargon, he reaches for visuals — images on the computer, models in the surgery, or a quick sketch. Analogies do the rest. “For a crown, I’ll say it’s a cap that sits on top of the tooth. For a bridge, it’s a couple of caps joined together.”

Cost and longevity are always part of the conversation. He talks patients through what each option costs and how long it can be expected to last, drawing on dental research into the lifespan of crowns, bridges and implants. You’ll leave with a written treatment plan — emailed or printed — to consider at home. “We’re a very open practice,” he adds. “We want patients to get in touch. If they have any further questions, they’re welcome to email or call.”

Oral Surgery and Extractions

Oral surgery is a particular interest of Dr Nasir’s, and it covers more than people realise — “from dental extractions to dental implants to biopsies.” His own focus is extractions: wisdom teeth, teeth that are rotated awkwardly or buried under the gum, teeth sitting near the sinus, or a straightforward extraction for an anxious patient.

He’s qualified in dental implants, too, though at Park Street Dental those are usually referred to Dr Adam Conradi — “the whiz at dental implants here.” Whatever the procedure, the priority stays the same. “It’s all about making the patient comfortable, and then taking them through the process with clear consent and direction from start to finish.”

Rapid Relief: When You’re in Pain

If you call the practice in pain, you’ll be offered a rapid relief appointment — something Dr Nasir prefers to think of as a focused appointment.

“It’s focused on the one area that’s causing concern,” he says — a toothache you can’t quite pinpoint, a swelling, or an injury. After taking your history, he works through a simple checklist: where is it, when did it happen, and is there anything that makes it better or worse? An x-ray of that specific area often follows, “because a lot of the time there could be something lurking underneath.”

Then you’ll be offered a way forward. Depending on what’s found, that might be an extraction, a temporary or permanent filling, or the start of a root canal — opening the tooth, easing the pressure, placing some medication, and bringing you back to finish. “It’s about focusing on the one condition causing trouble, then bringing the patient back for a more comprehensive exam, so we can get them on a dental journey that’s a bit more positive.”

Children’s Dentistry: Start Early, Keep It Positive

Paediatric dentistry is another of Dr Nasir’s passions, and his advice to parents in Thame is not to wait. “As soon as the first tooth comes into the mouth, it’s a great idea to pop in and have a visit.”

Those early visits are about comfort, not treatment. He deliberately allows more time than the appointment needs — “just in case the child doesn’t feel like they want to open their mouth” — and never wants a child to feel pressured or told off. Appointments start with a casual chat outside the chair before anything else. An older sibling going first can help, a parent can sit in the chair alongside their child, and a generous supply of stickers never hurts.

“The sooner you bring them in, the sooner you can normalise it,” he says. It sets a child up for a positive dental journey that can last the rest of their life — and, he reminds parents, it works best alongside making brushing a positive experience at home.
