Dental check-ups for children

At Park Street Dental Clinic, we believe that it is important for children to be educated regarding their diet and oral health as early as possible. We therefore recommend that your child visits the dentist regularly from the age of six months. Regular visits allow your child to become relaxed and comfortable within a dental setting from an early age.

Looking after your child’s oral health at home

As soon as their first teeth appear, your child should be encouraged to brush their teeth twice a day – with supervision. A child should be able to brush their teeth independently from around the age of 7.

The main cause of tooth decay is not the amount of sugar or acid in the diet, but how often it is eaten or drunk. The more often your child has sugary or acidic foods or drinks, the more likely they are to have decay. So it is important to have sugary and acidic foods just at mealtimes. If you want to give your child a snack, try to stick to cheese, vegetables and fruit. Try to limit how much dried fruit you give as it is high in sugar and sticks to the teeth, prolonging sugar exposure. Don’t give them drinks containing sugars, including fruit juices, between meals. Give them water or milk instead.
